FABENS, TX- Late Sunday night 08-29-10 at 9:50 pm, Deputies were dispatched to a single vehicle roll-over accident in the area of SW 1st St. & S. Fabens Rd. Fabens ,TX. Deputies arrived within minutes to learn that a dark Blue Kia Rio (3 occupants) had rolled into an irrigation canal in which a 15 year-old female passenger was ejected. Due to the severity of injuries, Special Traffic Investigators were summoned to the scene.
Investigation by STI’s revealed the 2003 KIA Rio driven by a 19 year-old male was traveling northbound at the 200 block of South Fabens road approaching the 400 block of Southwest First Street. The vehicle approached a sharp curve located at this intersection which is a fork in the road. The driver was unable to navigate through the curve due to the heavy rain and instead drove through the curve northbound into an irrigation ditch causing the vehicle to roll over onto the left portion of the vehicle, on its side, facing north. The left rear passenger, a 15 year-old female from San Elizario, TX was partially ejected through the rear window of the vehicle causing her to land on the irrigation bank, just west of the vehicle.
Speed and Alcohol were not factors in the accident, however the rainy conditions at the time of the accident was a factor in the crash.
The occupants were identified as follows:
- Driver: ERIC MOTA (19) of San Elizario, TX – Cited for Violation of TC. 545.351 Exceeding a Safe and Prudent Speed.
- Front Passenger: DENISE SOSA (17) of San Elizario, TX – did not suffer serious injuries.
- Rear Passenger: 15 year-old female of San Elizario, TX (will not be identified at this time because of her age) - suffered a concussion as a result of the accident and is recovering at University Medical Center for head injuries.
