SAN ELIZARIO, TX- Friday night 08-27-2010 at approximately 7:15 PM, Deputies were called out to a residence in the reference to the 400 block of Uxmal, San Elizario,Texas in reference to a found explosive device (grenade). Deputies arrived & met with the homeowner / Reporter who told authorities that while working on a construction site inside the city limits, he found a grenade buried in the dirt. Not knowing what to do, the Reporter placed the grenade in the bed of his pick up truck & drove to his home in San Elizario, TX & called 9-11. For precautionary reasons the surrounding neighbors were evacuated temporarily and the street was blocked off. San Elizario Fire Department responded & the Fort Bliss Bomb Detonator Squad was summoned to the scene. At about 9:30 PM, Ft. Bliss Bomb Squad arrived on scene and took custody of the grenade. The neighborhood was then deemed safe & all were allowed to return to their homes.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office in March of 2001 was the first Sheriff’s Office in the State of Texas to be Internationally Accredited from CALEA and is now the recipient of the First CALEA Tri-Arc award in Texas (4th in the Nation) to have accreditations in: Law Enforcement, Communications, Training Academy.
